How to Transfer a Car Title When Donating

The single most common hesitation donors have is paperwork — specifically, the title. The good news: when you donate through an established program, the transfer is straightforward and the charity handles most of it. Here is what you need to know.

What You Do

  1. Locate your title. Check your glove box, safe, or with your lienholder if the loan was recently paid off.
  2. Sign the seller/transfer section. Sign exactly as your name appears on the front. Do not date or fill in the buyer section unless instructed.
  3. Note the odometer reading in the space provided if your state requires it.
  4. Remove your plates if your state requires it, and cancel your registration and insurance after pickup.

Common Title Situations

Lost title? Most states issue a duplicate for a small fee — or the charity can often guide you to alternatives. Lien on the title? You will need a lien release from the lender. Two owners listed? Both may need to sign depending on whether the title says "and" or "or."
