Car Donation Tax Year Deadline: The December 31 Rules

Every December, donor calls spike for one reason: the tax year deadline. To claim a vehicle donation on this year's return, the donation must be completed by December 31. But what counts as "complete" trips people up.

What the IRS Considers the Donation Date

The donation date is when you transfer control of the vehicle to the charity — in practice, the pickup date (or the date you drop it off), not the date you first called or filled out a form. A December 28 call with a January 3 pickup belongs to next tax year.

Your December Checklist

  1. Call early in the month. Pickup slots fill fast in late December. Aim to contact us by mid-month.
  2. Locate your title now. A missing title is the #1 deadline-killer.
  3. Get your receipt at pickup. Keep the dated acknowledgment with your tax records.
  4. Watch for Form 1098-C. It arrives after the vehicle sells; you will need it if the deduction exceeds $500.

If You Miss the Deadline

It is not a loss — the deduction simply moves to next year's return. For many donors, especially those bunching deductions, that timing works out fine anyway.
